About

Steve Outing

Steve Outing is a thought leader in the online media industry, having spent the last 14 years assisting and advising media companies on Internet strategy and being on the bleeding edge of media trends. He has written a popular and widely read column, “Stop The Presses!” for Editor & Publisher Online, since 1995, which covers the news industry and its evolution in the digital age.

His current projects include:

  • techGRL - An online “reinvention of the comic strip” produced with California artist Steve Kearsley. The duo have created a comic about a family of tech-heads and are utilizing innovative social media and social networking techniques to allow the audience to participate and be part of the comic.
  • ReinventingClassifieds.com - An initiative to create solutions for the beleaguered newspaper classifieds industry, allowing newspapers to adapt to a distributed-web model and recover lost revenues.

An expert in grassroots media and so-called “citizen journalism,” Steve founded the Enthusiast Group, an online media company deploying grassroots media and social networking to outdoor and adventure sports, in 2005. The company ceased operations in late 2007.

Previously, he was a senior editor at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, a school for professional journalists and a research institution, where he wrote, blogged and conducted research on Internet-related topics. Among his Poynter projects was leading the Eyetrack III research study of online news website consumer behavior.

Over the years, Steve has written various books and research reports on Internet and media; consulted to media companies; and given presentations and speeches around the world. In 2000, he was honored with an EPpy award for Outstanding Individual Achievement for his service to the media industry.

Steve is also an avid mountain biking, road biking and outdoor enthusiast. He lives in Boulder, Colorado, with his wife and two daughters.
